Funding Christmas

Apparently, the Home Office is considering withdrawing funding for the St Martins in the Fields Christmas Carol Service because (according to Michael Gove in The Times) "because of its unacceptably Christmassy overtones". I can think of a great many better reasons: because the Home Office has better things on which to spend money, because most people do not live anywhere near St Martins in the Fields, because funding religious services is outside the brief of the Home Office (or any other government department) or just because people who attend the service can pay for it themselves.
