April 23rd

To The Times

25 April 2003

Sir

Of course we should recognise the significance of April 23rd. It should be a national holiday and the BBC should mark it with plays and poetry, but not in honour of a mythical saint whose only notable achievement is transparently fictional. It is better to remember the creators of fiction than their creatures, so let us commemorate the birth, and death, of the greatest writer in the English language. If Greg Dyke is reading: the man's name is Shakespeare, and your corporation used to make innovative productions of his work.
