ID cards

To The Times

29 May 2003

Sir

John Kampfner's article (29 May 2003) was entirely devoted to the proposition that the civil liberties implications of compulsory ID cards are not quite as serious as some critics maintain. He was not able to advocate any benefits that would derive from the scheme. He did not suggest that any unsolved crimes could be cleared up by such a scheme. If the best that can be said for the proposal is that it will not be all that harmful it would seem a serious wasted of the billions of pounds involved.

Yours truly
